You’ve lost 50% of your goal weight loss and feeling good. It’s been a hard slog. The compliments are waning, ‘Ooh, you’ve lost weight..well done..how’ve you done it?’ You’ve been on a diet so long that people no longer notice and you’re hard slogs are fading into the wallpaper.

Tired of withstanding the fasting and denial of the yearning desire for those delectable treats you decide to peek into the fridge and dare to dream about gorging on what the rest of the family eat. No, if you’re going to do this then you may as well call a take-away and ditch the exercise class at 6pm; it’s cold outside, getting dark. Yeah, go on. Gorge…

Back to reality please

Don’t listen to the Devil on your shoulder. We all know, (atheist or not) that the devil is bad and should be ignored at all costs. So firstly, shut that fridge door and contemplate the guilt you would feel afterwards. Yes, your tum will be fit to burst but after the initial elation, but disgust seeps in to your mind. See the calories tot up, imagine the fat coursing through your veins, imagine your problem areas getting bigger and the exercise you’ll have to do to work it off.

Staying motivated

Now, you’re on a roll. Get your kit on and get in to that class. It may be mundane, but occupy your mind. Get angry; exercise is a great natural release for anger and motivates you to work harder without realising it. Think of all those nasty comments you’ve taken in and accepted, jokes you’ve been the brunt of, embarrassing moments when things haven’t fitted and turn that evil quip or that scarring memory in to a positive.

Push those weights, work those legs, plunge your squats that little bit harder and imagine others faces when you look gorgeous and hot. You will arise from the fire like a phoenix from the flames and it’ll be all your own hard work. You’re stronger than anyone you know and you can now feel that strength beat through your body.

And later in the day

You did it! It’s too late to eat now. Tomorrow go shopping and get some new clothes. Clothes that are tailored well and actually fit your size, that clearly say,’I've lost weight!’. On Monday, even though you’re only half way to your goal they will all suddenly notice that your waist looks trimmer, you’re legs are slimmer and you’ve a kick in your step. Take the positive comments from others as a pat on the back. Remember the feeling, bottle it up in your mind and save it for later to undo when the fridge comes calling.

Whilst you’re at it, remember to treat yourself when you do well. If you hit that target have a day out or treat yourself to a stay at a fancy spa. Teach yourself to link feeling good with eating well and exercise. Click here for some ideas.

Be a forward thinker

Imagine the future…You’re mental strength is key to maintaining a long term diet where a large total weight loss is needed.  You build up this strength over the course of the diet, it doesn’t come at the start or in the middle. You’ll only realise it’s there when you’ve met you’re final goal, and then it’ll shock your conscious mind  in to recognising  that you never knew you had it in you and that you underestimated yourself for a long time.
